Lyrics

YOU AND ME AND THE HOLY GHOST
(Lyrics and music by Winston Apple)

I’m on an west bound train with Sweet Baby James, having the time of my life
I am surrounded by angry renegades and they’re all sharpening their knives
They should’ve known that if they stuck to their guns, there’d be a price to pay, b
Yet they still seem reluctant to change the minds or mend their evil ways

I’ve got Sweet Baby James all tuned up
I’m headed for the baggage car to sing and play
Hoping to shed a little baggage of my own as we wind our way
Through the wide-open spaces of this country I have always called my home
But it was here long before I was born and will be here long after I’ve gone
Returned to dust or at the very least to a bag of bones
I have always craved solitude, but right now I don’t really want to be alone
So, come on, baby won’t you
Forget your troubles and get on board
This train is powered and guided by a Heavenly Host
Let’s raise our glasses, let’s drink a toast
Here’s to you and me and the Holy Ghost

I’ve got a head full of ideas sometimes they threaten to carry me away
And so I go into a quiet room, get down on my knees and I pray
I pray for them and for you and sometimes mostly for myself
But more and more these days the prayers I say are for everybody else
I pray the lonely and forgotten will feel the warm glow of God’s sweet Love
There are so many desperate souls among us who do not feel it near enough
They really need to forget their troubles and get on board
This train is powered and guided by a Heavenly Host
Let’s raise our glasses, let’s drink a toast
Here’s to you and me and the Holy Ghost

I’m on an east-bound train, me and Mary Beth are headed for the coast
And I rummage ‘round my suitcase looking for my lucky pick
The one I love the most
And she pulls it from thin air and hands it to me with a smile and a kiss
And I can’t help but be impressed with her endless and amazing bag of tricks
Later on that very same night I ran into Mickie Most and the Holy Ghost
I can’t remember the last time I saw the two of them together
On a train that was headed for the coast

So come on, Baby, won’t you forget your troubles and get on board
This train is powered and guided by a Heavenly Host
Let’s raise our glasses, let’s drink a toast
Here’s to you and me and the Holy Ghost

Well, I always liked Ike and Mickey Mouse had his moments as well
And I know Pluto was a dog, Goofy might’ve been one too, it’s hard to tell
And once upon a time, Pluto was a planet, now they say it’s too small
And they don’t tell you this out loud, but there are some rides that you can’t go on if you are too tall
