Lyrics

OUR GOLDEN DOOR
(Lyrics and music by Winston Apple)

Crossing over in the dead of night
Into the Land of Opportunity looking for a better life
The Mother of Exiles welcomes them with Love and Light
Why do you want to treat them so unkind?
These are your brothers, these are your sisters

Imagine there’s no countries
There’d be no crime committed
No reason to make them pay or to send them away
All they want to do is work hard and be free, just like you and me
And, yes, there are some among them who would like to stay
Why are you so intent on sending them away?

They came knocking on our golden door
Just like millions and millions have before
People everywhere want to be free and to get ahead
I believe we ought to treat them like the Bible says
“Love thy neighbor, as thyself.”

Our latest refugees are children sent here on their own
Looking for safe harbor and a better life than they have known
As their long and dangerous journey nears its end
I hear you say, “Hey! I hear you knocking, but you can’t come in.”
With a heart as cold as ice and a mind set in stone, you say
“Send them back. We don’t want them here. Turn them away.”
You call yourself a Christian
Is that how you would treat Baby Moses in his basket, floating in the reeds?
